More than two dozen volunteers gathered on Feb. 4 to make Valentine cards for the community. Using paper scraps and a treasure trove of “bits and pieces,” participants created unique and fun Valentines to distribute to local emergency responders and nonprofit organizations as a gesture of gratitude for their efforts.
The event was organized by former Print & Book Arts Studio Lead Amy Goldthwaite and Jane Carlin, a BARN member and vice president of the Puget Sound Book Artists. Last year, the group delivered handmade Valentines to people who work with local police, fire, library, Helpline House, and Bloedel Reserve with a note of thanks from BARN and PSBA.
“Valentines are fun to make and a way to share our thanks with organizations in our community,” says Jane. “It was fun to deliver ‘surprise’ packets of Valentines to local agencies.”
This year’s card-making event drew BARN members, friends, and first-time visitors to BARN from as far as Port Townsend, Olympia, and Bremerton. Many people commented about how fun it was to take time out and enjoy making something for someone, Jane says.
They look forward to doing it again next year.
