There’s still time to reserve your seat for the Writers’ Studio’s annual Dark and Stormy Night event 7-9 pm Oct. 28. This 21-plus event is sure to be a spooktacular evening with cocktails, wine, yummy treats, and short readings by esteemed local authors in the spirit of the season. The event will include original stories from:
- Lynn Brunelle, a four-time Emmy Award-winning writer for the television series Bill Nye the Science Guy
- Jon Mooallem, a journalist, author, and contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and This American Life
- Luciano Marano, a photojournalist, reporter and author
- Jennifer Longo, author of several books including “What I Carry”
- Rafe Posey, an author of “The Stars We Share,” a teacher at a maximum security prison, and bookseller at Eagle Harbor Books
- Megan Chance, a best-selling, critically acclaimed author of several novels as well as a popular workshop speaker
- Anna Quinn, author and founder of The Writers’ Workshop in Port Townsend, will read a scary scene from her new book, “Angeline.”
Eagle Harbor Book Co. will be on hand with a selection of titles for sale. Wear a costume, if you like, bring a friend, and be ready to be frightened and delighted. Tickets are $30.

Makers age 8 to 18 will enjoy BARN’s after-school youth classes on everything from welding and cooking to sewing and glass work. Classes run for three weeks from 2:30 to 5 pm, lining up with the Bainbridge Island School District’s early release days.

Autumn Leaves Glass Wreath

Learn how to construct a wreath that can be a table centerpiece or a suncatcher on your wall or window. In this two-day class, you’ll cut 30 pieces of glass into four different leaf shapes using templates that will be provided. Some grinding will be necessary prior to placing the leaves into the kiln for a contour fuse.
On day two, you’ll cut the wreath base and assemble the leaves, which are then tack-fused.

Brazing is ideally suited for joining dissimilar metals and is performed at relatively low temperatures. There are six fundamentals of brazing that every brazer should follow to ensure consistent and repeatable joint quality, strength, and reliability. The class will focus on “manual brazing,” that is, brazing with a hand-held torch and hand-fed filler metal. Oxy/Acetylene will be used.

See a demonstration of Artec Eva scanning equipment and learn how DittoForm Michigan LLC uses it to capture 3D digital images of real people. Those images are used to create foam models of the subjects. In the sewing world, these models are called custom dress forms and are used in the process of clothing and costume design.
Hear from Carol Huls, DittoForm’s president and CEO, about the small company’s history and her own unexpected journey into entrepreneurship.

Victoria Adukwei Bulley is a poet, a writer, and an artist. Her book QUIET, was winner of the Rathbones Folio Prize for Poetry, the John Pollard Foundation International Poetry Prize and shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize. In this workshop you’ll explore how to write poems that speak with the intimate, idiosyncratic voice of our innermost beings, with all of its poetic strangeness and freedom. Participants will be guided to generate new writing and receive feedback within the session. Scholarships are available for BIPOC writers.
