September brings watercolors, sketchbooks, and community back to the Drawing & Painting Studio. Watercolor Open Studio and Community Drawing both return this fall, giving you two easy ways to keep your pencils and brushes moving. Award-winning instructor Ina Xi joins us for a two-day watercolor workshop on boats and water, and a new drawing series kicks off for anyone ready to build real skill. Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or refining your watercolor technique, there’s a seat waiting for you.

Watercolor Boats and Water
Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 12-13, 9:30 AM – 3 PM: Award-winning instructor Ina Xi shows you how to draw boats beautifully and paint water with real movement and light. Learn new tools for capturing reflections, depth, and atmosphere in your watercolor work, a wonderful next step for painters ready to tackle a classic and challenging subject.
Introduction to Drawing With Pencil
3 sessions, beginning Thursday, Sept. 10, 9:30 AM – 12 PM: Build a solid foundation in observational drawing using graphite pencil, from basic mark-making to shading and proportion. You’ll learn to see shapes, values, and perspective the way an artist does, skills that carry into every other drawing and painting technique. A great starting point if you’re new to the studio.
Introduction to Drawing With Pen and Ink
3 sessions, beginning Thursday, Oct. 8, 9:30 AM – 12 PM: Discover the expressive, permanent line of pen and ink, from cross-hatching to stippling to bold contour work. You’ll build confidence making marks you can’t erase, sharpening your observation and decision-making in every medium you work in.
Make Your Own Sketchbook
Thursday, Oct. 15, 10 AM – 4 PM: Bind your own sketchbook by hand, from folding signatures to sewing the spine, and leave with a one-of-a-kind book ready to fill. It’s a relaxing, hands-on day for anyone who loves paper and process as much as the finished page.
