For many years, Bainbridge Island Friends of the Library (FOL) has posted dates and times of upcoming book sales on a simple sandwich board near the library’s High School Road entrance. It’s a great location, except for its proximity to a sidewalk frequented by creative young people who enjoy rearranging the letters.

“It’s amazing how many inappropriate words can be made out of 12 letters,” said Betsy Bidinger, FOL board president. “‘Boob Sale’ was one popular variant. We’ve wanted a new sign for years!”

A group of BARN volunteers led by David Grant stepped up to fill the need. A heavy-duty wooden sign featuring a copper roof to shield it from the elements and, perhaps most importantly, a glass cover with a lock, was recently installed with the help of Kip Bankart and Jim McKeever from the library.

The sign was designed by Warren Pollock. The lettering was made by Al Ebken on BARN’s CNC (computer numerical control) equipment. The copper roof was created by Linda Sohlberg. Grant handled the construction and installation. All donated their time and skills in support of BARN’s mission, which includes a commitment to community service.
