A Night to Remember

Prepare to be immersed in an atmosphere sparkling with energy and creativity. Explore BARN’s maker studios and experience unique insight into the creative processes.

Indulge your senses with a curated selection of beverages, appetizers, and a seated dinner, setting the stage for the highlight of the evening – our electrifying live auction and paddle call.

As part of this one-of-a-kind event, guests will have the chance to create artistic work under the guidance of accomplished artisans, crafting a one-of-a-kind piece to cherish from this unforgettable night.

Methow Valley Private Retreat

Escape for four wonderful nights to the beautiful Methow Valley in the North Cascades. Stay in a modern cabin set in a Ponderosa pine forest with views of the Chewuch River and the Pasayten Wilderness. The cabin has a huge outdoor deck for dining and relaxing, and it’s elevated, so you could even sleep out there for a treehouse vibe. Trails for hiking and mountain biking are right outside; Winthrop and Sun Mountain Lodge are seven miles away. Internet is available, but no cell service. For two to four people over three years old. Available any season but winter.

Embark on an unforgettable adventure aboard the 42-foot sailboat Resilience, guided by scientist, storyteller, and BARN member Beth Ann Mathews and her husband, Jim. This vessel plays a pivotal role in Beth’s gripping, award-winning book, “Deep Waters: A Memoir of Loss, Alaska Adventure, and Love Rekindled.” Beth and Jim, both accomplished marine biologists, will lead this five-hour excursion on Puget Sound next April. Birding, mammal-watching, a chance to take the helm, a delicious lunch — and a journey into the heart of a remarkable story. For four adults or two adults with two children ages eight and up.

A Trip to Brazil: Food, Culture and Entertainment

Enjoy a vicarious mid-winter escape to the colors, smells, sounds, and tastes of Brazil via a dinner party for up to six people in your home. Sandra Rocha Evanoff, a BARN member and Culinary Arts instructor, will prepare and serve a four-course meal along with caipirinha, the Brazilian national cocktail, and a menu that you will help select. One Hell of a Whiskey — Plus a Whiskey Tasting

Do you have an expert‘s taste for whiskey? Win this item and go home with a bottle of Westland Distillery’s Garryana 8th edition single malt, which the magazine Whiskey Advocate ranked as the third-best whiskey in the world for 2023. Then invite a group of 12 to a private tasting at High Spirits in Poulsbo, with paired snacks from Crabtree Kitchen & Bar. Will you discover a better whiskey? Maybe, but the bar is high. The Garryana “melds smoke and sweetness in superb fashion,” one judge wrote. “Toasted marshmallows, honey, and cinnamon sweetness linger on and on throughout the finish.”

Pancakes and Planetarium

Spend an unforgettable morning at BARN this winter by participating in a family-friendly event that blends culinary delight and stellar exploration. Feast on Executive Director Grae Drake’s legendary buttermilk pancakes, paired with delicious toppings and sides prepared by staff member Meghan Males. Then, take a seat in the Battle Point Astronomical Association’s mobile planetarium, an inflatable dome that will be set up inside BARN’s Great Room. The event will happen from 10 AM to noon on Saturday, Jan. 11. Sold by the seat for up to 40 people.

Painting by Johnpaul Jones

Bainbridge architect and landscape architect Johnpaul Jones has received international acclaim for projects ranging from the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., to zoos in Australia, Belize, and numerous U.S. cities. On Bainbridge, where he designed BARN and the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, he also is known as a talented artist whose work reflects his Native American heritage and reverence for the natural world. Jones donates his artwork to non-profit organizations he supports. He contributed a sketch of a double-crested cormorant to the 2023 Night at BARN auction. His 2024 contribution will be unveiled at the event.

Game Night Quiz Show and Pizza Experience

Join dynamic quizmaster Brent Bushnell for a fast-moving evening of games, trivia, digital trials, and physical tribulations as you and your guests pit your wits and dexterity against one another in “100 League.” Built at BARN, this interactive game tests brain and brawn with a custom game controller featuring arcade buttons — a one-of-a-kind game show experience. Host your game night at BARN or a venue of your choice (a large-screen TV is needed for optimal experience). Invite 10 to 40 friends. We’ll supply the pizza!

An Introduction to Fly Fishing with Mike Gearheard

Equipped with a new fishing rod and reel made on Bainbridge by Sage, a top-tier fishing gear manufacturer, join BARN member Mike Gearheard as you explore the fascinating — and addictive — sport of fly fishing. Mike will help you tie your own flies, guide you in learning to cast, and take you on several fly-fishing adventures, including beach fishing for sea-run cutthroat trout in Puget Sound and freshwater fishing in the Olympics. The gear is Sage’s 5-weight Foundation 4 Outfit, with a nine-foot pole and corresponding reel/line and case, ideal for trout fishing.

Private Printmaking Session with Wendy Orville in her Studio

Experience the magic of monotype — manipulating ink on a plexiglass plate and then printing the one-of-a-kind image on an etching press — with Wendy Orville, a beloved BARN instructor and talented artist represented by Harris Harvey Gallery in Seattle. She’s offering this three-hour class for one or two people, beginners to pros, in her charming, light-filled studio on the south end of Bainbridge Island.

The Romance of Northern Italy

Enjoy a five-night stay in a lovingly restored, two-bedroom apartment that sleeps four as you explore Pieve di Teco, a medieval village with porticoed streets, and the surrounding countryside of Liguria in northwestern Italy. The owner, a former pastry chef, will greet you with a basket of home-baked goods. She’ll also take you to a specialty food shop in the countryside to shop for local produce and products. On another day, learn to make pesto, the classic staple of Ligurian cuisine, at a local farm. View lodging details. Airfare and other travel expenses are not included.

Asian-Inspired Dinner by the Sea

Plan now for an enchanting evening next August: the Umi-Yama Dinner (translated to Sea-Mountains) is a multi-course menu showcasing Asian tastes and techniques — from traditional Japanese to modern twists and Pacific Northwest influences. We will celebrate the local abundance in a gorgeous setting overlooking Rich Passage. Tracy Matsue Loeffelholz and Wayne and Tina Chang — all popular instructors in BARN’s Culinary Arts Studio — will prepare and serve your party of six at the Point White home of Cyndy Holtz and Paul Nishman on a mutually agreeable date. Classic Wooden Rowboat

Here’s your chance to own a classic wooden boat — the kind you’d have had if you lived in the Great Gatsby era and needed to ferry passengers and gear from the shore to your yacht. Known as a Lawton Tender, this 10-foot-long rowboat seats three people comfortably and is perfect for exploring Eagle Harbor or fishing in lakes or sheltered bays. BARN member Michael Gunderson built it from 3/8-inch-thick cedar strips (no plywood). Volunteers in BARN’s Woodworking & Small Boatbuilding Studio finished it and handcrafted its custom oars.

Intricate Kumiko Panel

The art of Kumiko, developed in Japan around 600 AD, is a pinnacle of fine hand woodworking. Parts fit so precisely that intricate designs typically need no glue. BARN member Tom Leurquin shaped 271 pieces for this kawari shippo kikko panel, made of yellow cedar framed in padauk and cherry. 10” x 16”

Jazz Night with Jess

Invite your friends for a festive afternoon or evening of jazz standards with BARN Development Manager Jess Henderson. Jess, an experienced jazz vocalist, will bring some of her talented musician friends to play along. Your event can be indoors or out, with up to two hours of music on a mutually agreed-upon date. “Falling from a Ladder” Print by Virginia Davison

BARN printmaker and instructor Virginia Davison used a two-step carving process to create this print. She made the light-color prints from an easy-cut carving, cut into three pieces and inked individually. To add the black details, she carved linoleum, added ink, and pressed the block onto the lighter colors. 12” x 12”

Stars with Your Friends

Invite three friends to join you in making three-dimensional, five-pointed galvanized metal stars in a private, three-hour class taught by Linda Sohlberg in BARN’s Metal Fabrication Studio. Linda will introduce you to tools and techniques used in the Sheet Metal shop. The stars make great wall or garden decorations. No experience necessary.

Nature Preserve Getaway & Wildlife Rescue Tour

Get ready for a nature immersion experience! Enjoy two nights at a tranquil vacation home set amid a bird-rich wetland in southern Kitsap County. BARN Aprons

Commissioned by BARN’s Culinary Arts Studio but useful throughout BARN and at home, these sturdy olive aprons feature roomy pockets and are generously sized to protect against messes. The cotton canvas fabric was woven on 100-year-old handlooms in India and features an embroidered BARN logo.

Brushed Mohair Throw

This luxurious throw blanket, woven at BARN by Giovanni Strohmenger, is lightweight yet exceptionally warm because it’s primarily high-quality mohair, prized for durability, resilience, and lightness. Giovanni designed the weave pattern and chose soft colors for a relaxed and contemporary aesthetic. 42” x 76.” Composition: brushed mohair 78%, wool 13%, nylon 9%.

Enameled Earrings for You and Friends

Invite up to five friends to join you in a three-hour introduction to the art of enameling designs onto copper, led by dynamic BARN instructor Karin Luvaas. You’ll each go home with a pair of earrings fitted with sterling silver ear wires. Participants must be 14 or older.

Developed at BARN, the clock taps into the ferries’ location data every 5 seconds. Fully assembled. Inventor Matt Carrig will help install it, if needed.

Improv Game Night with Kate

Get ready for laughs and creativity. Kate Henderson, BARN’s membership and volunteer coordinator and member of The Edge Improv and Bainbridge Improv Collective, will introduce your group of six to 10 to fun, classic improv activities such as “Yes, and”. In this game, one person listens and accepts what another person does, then adds a detail back.

Walnut Cutting Board Set

BARN woodworking instructor Dawn Weaver wanted wood with a story for these end-grain cutting boards. She found it in a black walnut stash salvaged by fellow BARN member David Kotz from a tree being felled in Seattle’s Seward Park. Set includes stands and Board Balm Main board: 13½“ x 20.” Bar board: 5” x 6”

Metal Trellis with Glass and Mosaic Inserts

Inspired by the design of a Frank Lloyd Wright window, BARN member Johanna Muench welded this iron trellis and created its inserts: three glass tiles and a mosaic of the BARN logo. The trellis can be mounted on rebar stakes or leaned against a building or fence. 26’’ x 72”

Shimmering Glass Necklace and Earrings

Add sparkle to your look with this gorgeous necklace and earrings made by Tiffany Thiele. Thiele used a torch to melt and shape the glass flowers and leaves. She chose Double Helix Glassworks glass to create the iridescent effect.

The B.I. Stander Podcast

Elevate your business, stories, or ideas with a two-hour session in BARN’s Media Arts Studio, resulting in a professionally recorded 30- to 60- minute podcast interview with Tim Self, host of the local B.I Stander Podcast. Serve salads, popcorn, or chips in this beautiful, hand-turned bowl made by BARN member and woodturning instructor Bruce Claiborne from locally harvested wild cherry. The bowl has a food-safe Osmo finish, topped with a walnut wax. 9″ wide x 4″ tall.

Private Glass Arts Class for Six

Gather five friends or family members and dive into an exhilarating, four-hour fused glass class at BARN. You’ll each craft a stunning art piece of iridescent glass and give it striking bas-relief effects by fusing and slumping it in a kiln. Instructors Cynthia Jacobs and Anne Miller will work with you to schedule the date.
