Get ready for a spine-tingling evening of literary chills as BARN’s popular “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night” event returns on Saturday, Oct. 26. Join us for an unforgettable night of ghostly tales featuring a stellar lineup of accomplished local authors reading original tales designed to send shivers down your spine.

Kate OtaNew this year is the exciting addition of the Dark and Stormy Contest. We’re thrilled to announce that BARN Writers’ Studio member Kate Ota clinched the win with her gripping story, “Waxing Fame.” Kate will join our illustrious group of authors to read her winning piece at the event.

“Waxing Fame” follows pop superstar Aurora Wheeler’s desperate bid for fame. After her rival, Cece Jones, skyrockets to success following the placement of her likeness in Madam Fick’s Wax Museum, Aurora is determined to follow suit. But Madam Fick has other plans… The story impressed the reading committee with its precise characterization, building tension, and spot-on theme execution.

The event will feature an impressive roster of local literary talent, including:

  • Carol Cassella, national bestselling author
  • Christine Day, award-winning author and citizen of the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe
  • Rachel Noll James, award-winning screenwriter and director
  • Jennifer Longo, Washington State Book Award winner
  • Luciano Marano, award-winning writer and journalist
  • Rafe Posey, novelist and short story writer
  • Warren Read, award-winning author and educator

Indulge in delectable treats, wine, and the event’s signature dark ‘n’ stormy cocktails. For those feeling particularly brave, costumes are encouraged – if you dare!

The event is open to guests aged 21 and over, and tickets are still available, but they’re going fast! Whether you’re a fan of spine-chilling tales or simply looking for a unique way to celebrate the season, don’t miss this chance to get into the Halloween spirit with some of the best storytellers in the Pacific Northwest.
