Woodworkers’ Monthly Presentation:
Saturday, Oct. 11, 10 AM – 12 PM, or 12:30 – 2:30 PM
Our October Monthly Presentation is truly something special — a field trip to sail aboard the Valkyrie, a stunning 56-foot replica of a 1,000-year-old Norwegian Viking ship docked in Poulsbo.
Meet Captain Erik Knudsen for a fascinating dockside talk about the history and construction of this hand-crafted vessel, which took 11 years to build using Alaskan yellow cedar, white oak, and Douglas fir. Then experience the thrill of sailing aboard this Coast Guard-certified replica!
We’ve reserved two sailings on Saturday, Oct. 11, to accommodate more guests. Registration is limited to 12 participants per sailing – spots will fill quickly for this unique experience. Tickets are $45, with all proceeds supporting the operation and maintenance of the Valkyrie.

Handwork 2026: Make a Salish-Style Cedar Bentwood Box
5 meetings, beginning Monday, April 27, 9 AM – 5 PM
Join us as we welcome renowned Suquamish carver Randi Purser for an immersive five-day journey into traditional Coast Salish craftsmanship.
Transform a piece of locally milled, old-growth western red cedar into a stunning bentwood box carved with traditional Salish design elements. This beginner-friendly class will guide you through the complete process: selecting your plank, cutting precise V-shaped kerfs, steam-bending the wood into shape, securing it with wooden dowels, and carving your own design into the finished piece.
Throughout the week, Randi will share the rich cultural history of these boxes, Salish design traditions, and indigenous woodworking techniques passed down through generations. You’ll gain not just skills, but a deep appreciation for this living art form.
Class includes all materials and tools. Optional purchase of handmade traditional Salish carving knives (J-shaped knife and “not-so-crooked” knife) crafted by Randi herself.
This is a rare opportunity to learn from a master. Space is limited. Register now to secure your spot in this unforgettable Handwork Week experience! Register now
Wood Sale Set for Nov. 2
Come to the Woodworking Studio’s Annual Wood Sale, 10 AM to noon on Nov. 2. It’s a great opportunity to stock up on different species of wood for holiday projects.
This will be the first chance to purchase red oak slabs from a tree that once stood by the Bainbridge Historical Museum. The tree was felled last spring after becoming too unsteady.
David Kotz, who used to run the Coyote Woodworks sawmill on Bainbridge Island, will bring a truckload of select pieces for sale, as will Brent Herrick, who operates a local sawmill.
BARN members can also bring in wood for sale. Please contact Wayne at wwchang@mac.com for more details regarding reserving space and fees. Learn more
