This Month’s Meeting: The World of Osmo Finishes

Saturday, April 13, 10 – 11 AM
in the BARN Great Room

Learn about a wide range of clear and colored wood finishes from the German brand Osmo at the April monthly woodworkers’ presentation, which is free and open to all.

Hear from David Kirby, the Western Account Manager and technical advisor for Woodborn USA, the US importer and distributor of the Osmo finishes made by Holz und Color Gmbh & Co. KG in Warendorf, Germany.

Many BARN woodworkers are familiar with Osmo’s Polyx-Oil clear oil and wax finish for woodworking. It’s on many surfaces at BARN, including the stair treads. But the company also makes a wide array of interior and exterior finishes that add color to wood — no surprise, given that the company name incorporates both the German word for wood and the English word color.

All Osmo finishes have an oil base, so they are different from the water-based finishes that are common today. Yet they also differ from old-fashioned oil paints. Osmo’s colored products dry to a breathable finish and won’t crack, peel, blister, or flake off. Kirby will discuss application methods as well as techniques for restoring the finishes when needed.

After the presentation, people will have the option of heading down to the woodworking studio to get hands-on experience applying the finishes on sample pieces of wood.

These monthly presentations are open to all, with no need to pre-register. They are a good way to meet with other woodworkers while learning about different aspects of this craft. As usual, we’ll have coffee and nibbles.
