5 meetings, beginning Monday, April 27, 9 AM – 5 PM
Step into Alexander Calder’s world and master the art of creating kinetic sculptures that dance with air and motion. This intensive, five-day workshop bridges digital precision with handcraft intuition as you design and balance custom mobiles inspired by the inventor of this dynamic art form.
Led by sculptor and Rhino software developer Brian Gillespie, you’ll explore the fascinating challenges of mechanical balance, visual composition, graceful wire work, and fluid movement. Start with quick experiments using simple materials, then progress to laser-cut designs and larger-scale pieces using painted plywood or acrylic. We’ll dance between computer-aided design and hands-on craft, using Rhino and Grasshopper to unlock the math and physics of perfect balance while developing the hand skills to bring your vision to life.
No Rhino experience required. Just bring strong hands for wire work, a laptop, and your creative ideas (found objects and 3D print concepts welcome!). The week culminates with an exhibition of all mobiles hanging and moving together in the studio.
This special offering is part of Handwork Week 2026, a celebration of American craft in partnership with PBS’s Craft in America and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. Seats are limited, so register soon!
