To participate in Open Studio, you must first take a one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop class.

In addition to the Orientation to the Woodshop class, you will need to take any additional Safety Checkout classes covering tools you want to use.

Most woodworkers sign up for all three “gateway” classes soon after they join. These classes can be taken in any order and have no prerequisites:

  1. Orientation to the Woodshop (Free) – Covers shop policies and includes a tour to show the supplies and tools available.
  2. Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 – Qualifies you to use the table saws, jointers, planers, miter saws and drill presses.
  3. Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 2 – Qualifies you to use the bandsaws, most stationary sanders (spindle, disc, drum and edge belt sander), routers and router tables, and scroll saws.

Regardless of your experience level, Tool Safety classes are designed to make you familiar with the particular tools (type, size, brand and model) available to you in the BARN Woodworking Studio. Having a firm knowledge of this equipment will provide you with a higher level of work flow and safety during open studio.
