This season, the Woodworking & Small Boatbuilding Studio is full of cabinet and furniture making, from a free intro to crafting a liquor cabinet to a six-meeting build of a modern end table. We’re also launching a brand-new Youth Woodworking Apprentice series, where young makers can join for a single month or all four. There is a lot to build! Come find your next project.
Classes We Think You’ll Love
Cabinet and furniture making take center stage this season. Some of these classes are brand new, and all of them build on offerings makers have loved before.
Cabinet-Building Basics
Offered twice: 3 meetings beginning Thursday, Oct. 15, 12 – 3 PM, or 3 meetings beginning Wednesday, Nov. 11, 6 – 9 PM. Learn to design and build Euro-style (frameless) cabinets by completing a simple wall cabinet from start to finish. It is the foundation for kitchen storage, built-ins, and beyond, and a natural next step after a basics class. Offered twice this fall.
Make a Modern End Table
6 meetings, beginning Friday, Oct. 16, 3 – 6 PM. Build a clean, modern end table over six meetings and pick up a full range of furniture-making skills along the way. You leave with a finished piece for your home and techniques you’ll reach for on every project to come.
Intro to Craft a Liquor Cabinet/Wine Rack
Thursday, Sept. 10, 7 – 8 PM. Curious about the full liquor cabinet and wine rack build? This free, one-hour intro walks through what the project involves and how to buy your materials, so you can decide if it’s right for you. A relaxed, no-cost way to plan your next piece.
Frame-and-Panel Doors
2 meetings, beginning Monday, Oct. 5, 2 – 5 PM. Learn two ways to build frame-and-panel doors for cabinets or furniture, a classic technique that instantly elevates a piece.
Handmade Mortise and Tenon Joints
4 meetings, beginning Saturday, Oct. 10, 9 AM – 12 PM. Four kinds of mortise and tenon joints made with hand tools, the joinery at the heart of strong, lasting furniture.
Machine-Made Joinery
3 meetings, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, 6 – 9 PM. Cut a variety of joints on sample stock using the studio’s machines, building the repertoire behind furniture and cabinetry.
Create Professional Dovetails with a Router Jig
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 6 – 9 PM. Cut crisp, accurate dovetails quickly using a jig and the router table. A joint that looks like it took years to master.
Demystifying Cabinet Door Hardware
Saturday, Oct. 10, 9 AM – 12 PM. Sort out the options for cabinet door hardware in one focused morning.
Demystifying Cabinet Drawer Hardware
Sunday, Oct. 11, 9 AM – 12 PM. This companion session is on drawer hardware and how to choose it.
Making and Installing Cabinet Drawers
2 meetings, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1, 9 AM – 12 PM. Explore different drawer styles, then build and install one yourself.
New This Fall
Youth Woodworking Apprentice, Ages 10-14
Young makers build a different project each month while developing real woodworking skills and shop confidence. These sessions are brand new, and apprentices can join for a single month or sign up for all four. A very cool opportunity for the young maker in your life.

Turning and Hand-Tool Skills

3 meetings, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 11, 3 – 6 PM. Safety, tool control, and basic shapes for spindle and bowl turning.
Turning and Embellishing Lidded Boxes
3 meetings, beginning Monday, Aug. 17, 10:30 AM – 3 PM. Turn small boxes on the lathe, then add texture and color to transform them.
Sharpening Chisels and Plane Blades
2 meetings, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 2, 6 – 9 PM. The most important skill in hand woodworking: a truly sharp edge.
2 meetings, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, 3 – 6 PM. Make two bowls while building core woodturning skills.
Sunday, Sept. 13, 9 AM – 12 PM. Find, evaluate, and prepare wood for successful turning projects.
3 meetings, beginning Saturday, Oct. 17, 9 AM – 12 PM. A second fall run of the turning intro, on Saturdays in October.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, 6 – 9 PM. Design and build a toggle clamp jig for pattern shaping.
Free & Community
Community Spoon Carving is free and open to all. Drop in and carve alongside the BARN spoon carving community. Next up: Friday, Sept. 4, 5 – 8 PM. It runs monthly, so there is always another chance to join.
Two Ways to Help
Know your way around a shop? The Wood Studio regularly hears from people who are winding down their own shops and want to donate tools to BARN, or who need guidance clearing out a garage or workspace.
