Metal Casting in the Foundry

Thursday, Nov. 16, 6 – 9 pm

Learn and advance your metal-art skills by casting bronze or aluminum into a mold you’ve already created, you make in our Patternmaking for Casting in the Foundry class or one of our stock patterns. Molten metal is poured into the mold you’ve formed in green sand (an environmentally safe mixture of fine sand, clay, and water). After your casting cools, you’ll free it from the mold and experience the thrill as your artistic creation emerges.

Krenov Plane

Make a Krenov-Style Wooden Plane

Tuesday, Nov. 7, and Thursday, Nov. 8, 3 – 6 pm

A tuned wooden hand plane works as well as a premium metal plane and is soft on the hand. And you can make it with a flat bottom or one with a curve, perfect for challenges like backing out a boat plank or shaping concave parts of furniture. James Krenov, who inspired a generation of woodworkers to create details with hand tools, used these planes to smooth curved doors on furniture, a signature feature of his cabinets.
