This May, we’re thrilled to welcome textile artisan Judilee Fitzhugh to BARN for two special workshops that showcase her expertise in natural dyeing and traditional hand-stitching techniques.

Working from her farm studio in Molalla, Oregon, Fitzhugh has built a practice that deeply connects with nature’s rhythms – from shepherding her own sheep to creating vibrant natural dyes from garden-grown materials. Her approach to textile arts emphasizes sustainability, tradition, and mindful creation. Her classes explore time-honored textile techniques, from Japanese sashiko to Indian quilting traditions.

At BARN, Fitzhugh will offer two immersive workshops. The first, Natural Dyes: Color and Variation, will be held from May 23 to 25 and will demonstrate how natural dyes can rival synthetic alternatives while being gentler on the artisan and the environment. Participants will explore various fabrics and mordant combinations, creating their own hand-stitched samplers to document their color experiments.

Following this, Fitzhugh will lead Kawandi and Kantha: Country Stitching from India on May 26 and 27, introducing participants to two distinct Indian hand-stitching traditions. The workshop promises a deep dive into these historical techniques, with all materials provided and the opportunity to incorporate personal fabric choices.

As someone who follows the seasonal rhythms of farm life – from sheep shearing to garden planting – Fitzhugh brings deep expertise and a unique perspective on sustainable textile creation that bridges historical practices with contemporary needs. Don’t miss this opportunity!
