Stitching the Forest through the Trees

Fiber art superstar Sue Spargo brought her stitching magic to BARN in June. As always, the resulting work vibrated with color and artistry. And this time, it also reflected the wildness of the place we live. We’re excited to announce that Sue will also be returning to BARN next year!

For this year’s workshop, participants came to BARN after being on a year-long waitlist, from as far away as Ohio and California. That’s the kind of following that Spargo has built. Born in Zambia and educated in South Africa, her work is influenced by the energy and color of traditional African designs. She now makes her home in Uniontown, Ohio, and continues to teach, learn and share with folk- and fiber-artists around the world.

Spargo’s six-day class at BARN was based on her latest book, Forest for the Trees. It began with a visit to the Bloedel Reserve, where participants walked, observed and absorbed springtime in the Pacific Northwest. They came back to BARN with memories and photographs of their experience, which Sue helped them express with brightly colored threads and stitching wizardry.

The results were stunning, full of life and color. And the participants left inspired and energized by their new knowledge. Here’s what they said about the experience:

“Sue is a gifted artist and shares any information a person would like to receive. She gives detailed one on one instructions and checks on you to make sure you are happy with what you are working on. Her fountain is overflowing with all kinds of helpful hints.”

“I don’t live in Washington. Your facility is lovely, spacious and light. A delightful learning environment. I would love to come back for another similar fiber arts class.”

Of course we’re already planning Sue’s next event at BARN, tentatively scheduled for July 17-23, 2023.
