Want to learn shibori handstitching from a master? Check! How about tapesty or Navajo-style weaving? We have those too. Plus quilting, and the return of Kathy Hattori to teach natural dyeing. Whatever your fiber aspirations are, BARN’s fall calendar almost certainly has something to make them real.

Featured Events & Classes

Shibori Class

Shibori with Needle & Thread with Diana Gipson – September 11

This three-session workshop will introduce the basic Japanese Shibori dyeing technique of creating designs on silk fabric with needle and thread. You will learn how the simple running stitch can take you to the most intricate of designs.

Tapestry Class

Try It! Weaving a Tapestry – September 14

Curious about weaving? Join us for this three-hour Try It! class in the BARN Fiber Studio. You will practice basic weaving techniques while making a small tapestry. You will learn how to “warp” the loom, create patterns using at least two colors of “weft” yarn, and finish your weaving. This is a fun and easy way to begin your weaving journey.

Weaving on a 4-harness loom

Learn to Weave on a Four-Harness Loom – September 19

Weaving combines color, fiber, and patterns in endless unique options to create cloth.

This four-session class is hands-on using floor looms and other equipment. The class will emphasize learning how to weave, how to set up a floor loom, how to plan projects, and how to read a weaving draft. We will also talk about weave structure and patterns. During the class you will weave samples with the focus on learning how to weave and plan.

Fall Social

Fiber Fall Welcome Back Social – September 16

You are invited to join our fiber studio for a Fall social. We will overview the Fall program and share updates to our studio.
Bring any projects you worked on over the summer to share or just reconnect with fellow fiber friends. For anyone participating in the summer fiber challenge, we will have some fun prizes.

Pick-Up Sticks Pattern

Using Pick-up Sticks for Patterning on a Rigid Heddle Loom – October 1

Take your weaving to the next level in this class taught by Deborah Jarchow! If you already know the basics on your rigid heddle loom, create beautiful patterns while learning to use pick-up sticks. These complicated-looking patterns can be achieved with relative ease. Make a beautiful sampler while mastering this technique and learning many textural patterns. Although this is an on-line course, students are welcome to view the course in the Fiber Studio with other participants. We will live stream the class.

Knitting sample

Knitting 101: Intro to Knitting – October 3

Beginning at the basics, this class will teach you how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off at the end – everything you need to complete a scarf. During class you will make a gauge swatch to learn the stitches in a small format before casting on a scarf that you can work on for the remainder of class, ending with a knit sample of some of the ways to use the simple knit/purl combo!

Quilt swatch of birds

Quilting Basics: Budgies on a Twig – October 9 – December 11

Join us to make a small version of this charming modern pieced quilt. Beginners, experienced quilters, and everyone in between are welcome! If you’re new to quilting, you’ll learn basic quilting including two piecing techniques, preparing the quilt sandwich, and finishing. Experienced quilters will enjoy the clever piecing.
The pattern makes 6 birds. So we can complete a quilt in the time available, however, we’ve reduced the project to 3 birds, resulting in a 32” x 36” quilt that you can use for a wall hanging or a lap or crib quilt, or whatever you like.

Cedar Rose Basket

Cedar Rose Basket Vase with Erin and Becca – October 22

Build your basket making skills and use of natural materials in this two-day weekend class. You will be making a pattern vase from western red cedar bark, NW sweetgrass, big leaf maple bark and Irish waxed linen thread. The vase is approximately 4-1/2” by 2-1/2 in size.

Wool Applique

Try It! Wool on Wool Appliqué – October 27

Let your creativity “bloom” as you learn how to appliqué, layer and embroidery on the suppleness of wool. You will choose a basic color scheme to work with as you appliqué and layer pieces to build depth. Then learn embroidery stitches to create and embellish your bloom.

Example sewn bags and purses

Bag Making Basics – October 29 – 30

In the last few years, bag-making has become so popular! But how do you get started? Do you have to follow a pattern every time? Which materials are going to produce the results you want? How do you use hardware and where do you get it?
To answer these questions and more, let’s make a bag from quilting cotton, which you can quilt or not, with a recessed zipper, lining, an internal slip pocket and an adjustable cork strap. The bag will be lightly structured and measure about 8” x 10” x 3.”

Naturally Dyed Harvest Linens

Naturally Dyed Harvest Linens with Kathy Hattori – November 5

In this class, we combine natural dyeing with vintage, earth-friendly fabrics and hand embellishment to create a one-of-a-kind set of harvest table linens. Student will design, dye, and embellish a table runner of handwoven hemp (or hemp-cotton) as well as four coordinating napkins of lighter weight cotton. The fabrics and color palette will be earthy and rich to celebrate the harvest and to warm the holiday table.

Shibori on Grid

Shibori Stitching on a Grid with Diana Gipson – December 3

This class builds on introductory stitched Shibori techniques, where stitching in a straight line on a single layer of fabric creates a random look, giving a textural effect. In this next-level class, we’ll use this same straight stitch on a grid to bring control and create a distinct repeat in an organized stitch pattern.
